Awful.
And for all those "questions" about why a 5-year old would be left at his grandparents... Because kids love their grandparents? They (generally) love getting special time with grandparents, especially if said grandparents were soon to be moving away to another country, why wouldn't the boy have one more sleepover?
Or the mom and her son were over helping during/after the estate sale, Nathan fell asleep at some point, and she didn't want to wake him for the drive home and instead decided to leave him for the night.
Or the other two sons were sick and Nathan wasn't so they wanted him to have a night away from the germs.
Or, or, or... there are seriously a lot of plausible and totally rational explanations for why a grandchild would be having a sleepover with grandparents, regardless of the estate sale happening that day. I think pointing the finger of blame at the mom/parents is abhorrent and really, just seeking to find somewhere to place blame in effort to make ourselves as parents feel better (ie "I *never* would have left my 5-year old in that perfectly reasonable scenario!!"). Because leaving your kid at a grandparents is basically one of the safest things a parent can do. And having your child be in the wrong place wrong time at the murder of his grandparents is just completely unthinkable.
