I saw a really sickening post on Twitter from someone who claimed they knew the circumstances.

Said that the Grandfather and Garland had fought a few days previously and that he was concerned about safety. Had the grandson stay over as "insurance" that if Garland came back, the situation wouldn't escalate. Essentially, the little boy was there to protect him from anything bad happening since who would hurt a little kid or do something to him while he was in the house.

Personally, I have a hard time fathoming that situation because what Grandparent would use their grandchild as a human shield of sorts? I'm not a grandparent, in fact I'm still a rather new parent, but I can't see what thought process you'd have to use a small child to protect yourself if you thought your personal safety was in danger.

I truly hope that's just BS speculation, however how weird this case has been and how odd the circumstances are for the child being there, it does offer one explanation. Sickening as it is.
