I think a large reason that the third place matchup is kind of forgotten is that it's kind of buried between the most important games of the tournament, the semi-finals and the finals. This comparison makes it seem inconsequential at the time. They don't for example get much media attention, because the media is already focused on the final.

But I think the idea that people don't care is a bit of an illusion. After the heat of the tournament is gone, the kind of people who generally remember individual games seem to remember those ones just as well as many others, and have quite a few opinions about them. At least I've had quite a few football talks about the third place games of recent years.

"Appreciation" is of course something that's impossible to measure.

It's not close to being the highest appreciated game, sure. But I really don't think it's a "nothing" game either.

I still think it's more of a nothing game than a something game, but I'm also prepared to accept that the 2002 game may have been more of a classic than I previously assumed.

We'll see what kind of teams they put out on Saturday as to how seriously the managers are taking it.

Mood disorder acknowledged, I'll give you a wide berth from now on 😛
