I believe their argument is two-fold.

1) Allowing more cabs (or unlimited cabs) would reduce or eliminate the value of their license, which some have based their futures on.

2) More drivers means more competition means more cabs being forced to take less desirable hours/fares.

I have no sympathy for either point, but someone at city hall obviously does.
