And, by Saturday’s deadline, the lanky forward had decided to do exactly that.
“No, it really doesn’t (surprise me),” general manager Brad Treliving said at WinSport’s Ice Complex. “I’ve had some talks with (his agent J.P. Barry) over the last little bit. To me it’s part of the process. We’ll continue to talk.”
Colborne, 24, had been one of 20 National Hockey League players to file for arbitration.
Last season — his first full campaign in the NHL — the Calgarian collected 28 points in 80 games, while drawing a salary of $600,000.
“It’s been a busy few weeks for everyone,” said Treliving. “The fact that we haven’t got anything done before him filing is no indication of us not wanting to get a deal done — and vice versa from his side as well.
“We’ll continue to talk and hopefully get something done sooner rather than later.”
Arbitration hearings are slated for July 20 to Aug. 4 in Toronto.
However, many deals are struck in the doorway of the conference room. Treliving recalled that happening during his days with the Phoenix Coyotes — with Lauri Korpikoski.
“It was settled, virtually, at 8:59 and 30 seconds.”
It’s also worth noting that the hearings themselves can be unpleasant, particularly for the player, whose shortcomings are outlined in great detail.
