Arbitration would not go that well for Byron. At best he's looking at a Zuccarello-just-over-a-million-dollar salary. Except Zuccarello was awarded that in part because of his 0.50 points per game heading into the case which Byron trails behind.
The comparable players to Byron with 10 goals, 30 points and 80 games (spread out over 4 seasons) in the NHL are going to be a lot closer to averaging 600K than 1.8M, that's for sure. But it's all moot, they didn't even qualify him. He was a UFA and I'm sure his agent called around. He got a significant raise with the Flames simply by having a one-way contract and he probably should be thankful for getting that.
