I would say not more barbaric but more dangerous. The amount of horses on the track (24 in total) is a problem if one should fall. They are joined together in bunches of four to a wagon so if one goes down all four go down, horses are not built to take falls. The power they have as a four headed team makes controlling them very difficult and stopping them impossible, thoroughbreds love to run.
