She's probably emotionally exhausted. I can only speculate based on my experience with my own grief (nothing close to the uncertainty of where you child is, however), but I know I hit a point where I just feel like a numb robot.
Or, perhaps with the father displaying such clear emotional distress, she felt she needed to be strong in her appearance for her son.
Like you, I have no clue how I would or should react in a situation like that. I simply exercised whatever empathy I could and tried to compute it from her POV after days worrying about her son.
