This specific trade was not done to "make the team better" in the short term. You don't trade a player like Kesler with the plan to make your team "better". You will obviously be worse off than you were because you will not get a player who is similar back (why would the team trade for him?) You trade a player like Kesler when it is time to change your team and aim for something different down the line. Whether it is better than its previous form depends on how that goes.
What the team got was cap space, more picks to either draft or make more moves with. That was the goal and the goal has been met while getting a player who can play for the team now (Bonino) and a player who could be something in two or three years (Sbisa).
