That's the new normal. Some people call them stupid contracts
They don't realize the balancing act that the new 8-year contract brought in. Too many people focused on cap hits as opposed to actual cash. Imagine if HR told you could make 1,000,000M fun time bucks, the very same as your boss! Except your boss's equivalent real money salary, through some maths, ended up being 150,000 and yours is 30,000. You would tell HR to #### off before walking out of the office.

Well now look at Weber who will end up making over 10M a year for the next 10 years. Why should Kane and Toews give a #### about his cap hit? They should be focused on the cash if that's what they are after. Parise and Suter, same thing, making on average 10 million a year for the first 8 years of their contracts. Now, of course, the new rules do put constraints that have to be factored but there's absolute evidence that teams are willing to pay top players in their prime north of 10M a year to play for them. And in the case of Nashville they weren't up against the cap, not only did they pay Weber 14M this year but they had cash to spend if they could/wanted to. They also didn't make the playoffs and that's one of the major factors Kane and Toews will have to assess if they want to chase the money in free agency.
