"Simply ridiculous" seems a bit much. Both Toews and Landeskog do fine as defensive centres in the West. They're both about the same height and 20-30 lbs heavier. Not sure where I can find their draft year vitals, but given their body types I would venture to say they weren't much different.
6ft and 183, the kid has a lot of room to grow and add weight.
