I have no problem with wanting players to not cheat and/or bend the rules. (Even though "if you're not cheating, you're not trying" has some truth to it.)
It is however empty machismo if you think it has something to do with "manning up". Hockey is just filled with that kind of language and "logic". It's very tiresome to listen to.

Thanks for pretty much underlining my point
(That's not to say that soccer is free of irritating machismo. But hockey is far worse. And that's enough about this for me for now.)
