It is very possible that he had no idea what he was giving up until he did give it up. I am sure the realization that he would be a 9-5 worker the rest of his life hit pretty hard. Maybe that is the wake up he needed.
Hopefully it works out for him.
I believe in second chances, and try not to rejoice in someone else's misfortune (where self-caused or not).
