Well during that time Colorado did become under "new management" with Sakic and Roy having entering the picture.

Regardless, do you think O'Reilly is worth $6.5M? This is absolutely the right move for Colorado as they either negotiate a new deal with O'Reilly or they have a chance to keep him for less than what they paid for him last season.

And it's also a different situation with Varlamov. Colorado is buying UFA years with Varlamov's contract, not so with O'Reilly. Apparently, Colorado's offer for O'Reilly was a 2 year contract for $3.5M each or 5 year contract for about the same amount. Not sure if that can be classified as nickel and diming given that was O'Reilly was unproven two seasons ago and was on his second contract.
