Empire strikes back and return of the Sith and even attack of the Clones were all pretty dark movies at their heart.
You could even argue that the end of Jedi was dark because while they celebrated that night, with the destruction of the death star the rebel scum would leave the planet the next day and the Ewoks would be left to a wrecked planet due to the destruction of a moon sized metal structure in their orbit.
A new hope was a positive ending but there was the underlying theme that they hadn't beaten the Empire and that outside of Tarkin nobody major had died except for 100,000's of innocent civilian workers on that station and slaves. You knew that the Empire would retaliate.
Yup the whole Star wars 6 film series was pretty damn grim.
