I hear regular stories about $15,000+ engagement rings on a regular basis. Just something about O&G money I guess? Luckily, I won't have to go through that, but I will still have to choose something "nice". I'd rather buy a car with $15k. I also hear there's quite a few of the girls who don't really like their ring...
That being said, jewelery is personal preference. If a couple is happy with a rock vs a car. That's fine by me. But I will tell people that scold me for not considering 3-6 month wages on a ring to #### off. It's my decision and it goes on my SO's finger, everyone else can go to hell.
Side topic... have you insured your ring?
