The Penguins problem isn't paying Malkin and Crosby big bucks... its paying $8.3 million for an average goalie (Fleury) and an overhill defenseman (Scuderi).

The Kings had/have two guys over $7M (Doughty/Gaborik), and 4 other guys over $5M (Quick, Kopitar, Brown, Richards and Carter). Its not like they are full of guys taking discounts. The two guys who are underpaid (Doughty/Kopitar) signed a long while back and weren't big discounts)
Extremely poor comparisons. Leddy and Rozsival are not worth $4.9 million. They are worth about a million per year, which is all the Blackhawks will be able to afford to pay their 5/6th defensemen if they sign Toews and Kane to massive deals.

Crawford, who isn't an elite goalie either, as evidenced by his crappy playoffs is making $6 million. Not exactly a bang for your buck contract. Their 2nd line center, as I mentioned, is Handzus, who who probably be a 3rd line center on the Flames and they finished much lower in the standings. Not exactly a great showing of depth.

As for the Kings...Gaborik is no lock to resign with the Kings, and given that they only had him for a few months, you can't possibly use him as an example. Richards and Carter are great examples of star players making less money allowing their team to add more depth to the lineup.

Over $5 million isn't exactly much for players like Kopitar, Quick, Brown and others. People here are saying Toews and Kane should take the full $12 million per year, which would be more than double what all those guys make, and Kopitar is arguably as good as Toews is.

But hey, tie up $24 million in two guys for 10 years and let them play without any help for as long.

Especially a guy like Kane, who as skilled as he is, didn't exactly show up till the 3rd round. He can take over a game if he wants, but how often does he just float around? Is that a guy you want to pay $12 million per year too? Look at Malkin. World class skill, but not exactly a guy the Penguins can depend on.
