I suspect there is just more ice hockey players as well. In vancouver, it's only in the past ten years that rec leagues have really taken off with all the new ice surfaces available. Still expensive as ####, which is why I switched to ball. I am playing three or four different ball leagues plus drop ins for still less money than my one ice.
