The show has done quite a few things better than the books. Arya being Tywin's servant girl was never in the books but is easily one of best parts of the entire series. And in the Red Wedding the show had the balls to kick it off by killing Rob's pregnant wife, it was much more brutal than the books. I also like how they got Bran to the Children far quicker than Martin did, aside from the Brienne chapters that you mentioned those were easily the most boring in the series
