With respect to flood cleanup, there were a ton of groups that helped on many levels, religious or not, the LDS church was not alone for sure, but they were very visible in almost every area I went to help with, partially due to the yellow shirts they wore.
In the end, I don't care why someone helped, but I greatly respect anyone that did, because in the end, people who got screwed over by nature got helped out by people. If the LDS church did it so that in a few years down the road people might not slam the door on missionaries, so be it. I never got that impression though.
edit: As to the original topic, like most religious organizations, this is an area where the LDS church is "behind the times". I wouldn't be surprised if, in time, it changes. For me, things like actual equal pay for equal work and severe human rights violations against women/girls are much, much higher on the list
