In 1993, the Clinton administration's proposed healthcare reform bill (spearheaded by Hillary) was a government run, single-payer, universal system like most other industrialized western democracies. Newt Gingrich's counter-proposal was private insurance model with an individual mandate. His proposed solution was later adopted by the state of Massachusetts where it was colloquially known as "Romneycare". This later served as the template for the Affordable Care Act, aka "Obamacare".

Yeah, the Democrats sure have shifted to the left since the Clinton days.
