Labour is labour. I'm providing the materials, they're trying to chisel me out of 300 bucks.

Point still stands. Take your steak home and buy a BBQ for $300. Use it again if you want to. The same goes for my car. I would have to spend thousands of dollars on parts, machines and courses in order to learn how to do simple maintenance. I'd likely be ahead if they charged me $900.
I'm of the mindset if I can't/won't do it, then I have to pay for it, or go without. If I deem the price outrageous, I look for a cheaper option, or go without. You never said what the other prices were. Were they all $300? If so, that sounds like the going rate. If not, ignore the one that charges $300 and go with a cheaper option. Maybe it isn't worth their time for less than that. What you deem as a fair price for labour, may not be anywhere close to what everyone else deems a fair price. You said a guy on kijiji is cheaper? Shocking that a guy that doesn't have overhead, and likely doesn't pay business license or taxes would be cheaper. If they were only charging $20 for the repair, they might be so busy that they'd have to bring in multiple employees, and they'd be losing money. Then they'd have to raise their prices, which you would deem unfair.
Since the price of the part is $8, maybe they are marking it up by $21 to $29, and $300 is the labour cost. It could be a specialized technique or they have to buy a really expensive machine to do it. I don't know, what it is. I would have no idea where to start on replacing my phone screen. At that price I might just buy a new phone, which may be the point of pricing it that high.
