Born and raised in yyc, went to school in Edmonton, back in yyc now.

I remember going up to Edmonton and learning of the hate they had for Calgary - I always thought it was so funny because Calgaryians didn't give a rat @ss about what was going on up there, yet they cared so dam much about us via their hate. This thread has made me realize were pretty much all the same now.

Calgary is my home, and I will always prefer it to any city. It's hard for anything to be underrated, but Edmonton is.

Surprisingly to likely only you and about 16 other Calgarians, Edmonton is - in fact - OVERrated. They're the "capital" so they good some good faith from people who've never really been there or anywhere in Alberta, but Edmonton is the 5th or 6th best city in Alberta.

There are three types of people who like Edmonton:
1. People born there
2. People from much smaller/worse places
3. People whose rating systems end at "not that bad." (For example: "Canned chicken isn't actually that bad!" or "Yeah the dentist forgot the freezing before he did the root canal, but it wasn't actually that bad!")

Calgary is the Prime Cut, Edmonton is the deli meat. Sure, you can eat both, but Edmonton might give you Listeria.

Having lived in Edmonton, and visited many times, I offer this as the simple and undebatable truth, and I apologise for your confusion. Nobody blames Calgarians who go to Edmonton and say "Wow guys! Maybe we're wrong!" but like the ending of Shutter Island, sometimes there's only one real solution.
