I guess the best argument would be that the initial accident would not have happened with fully automated cars. The initial issue was that somebody pulled out to pass without shoulder checking; and I was in her blind spot (also passing.)
However the going off the cliff thing happened while my car was still in a body roll from going back onto 4 wheels; the pickup truck that launched over my car snagged me and put me onto 2 wheels for a moment. I actually used my emergency brake to steer onto the ledge. I had maybe 10-15 feet of road left at that point and the road was slick enough with frost that steering wouldn't have helped.
While everything I did could be programmed into a car; including the locking of specific brakes (my 2011 GMC does that already as part of traction control)- this comes down to a case of knowing I didn't have enough time to stop before running out of road. I chose to minimize my damage instead of a futile attempt at stopping.
