ROUND 2, 34TH OVERALL JACK DOUGHERTY D FROM THE USHL
23-4-8-12:6'2, 186lbs, shoots right, May 25th, 1996
Dougherty will be heading to the U of Wisconsin this fall. He's a very good two way defenseman. He can shut down any team's top player. He's very smart. Poised with the puck he can fire good two way passes to breakout of the zone. He can QB a PP and always seems to find the open man even with defenders coming hard at him. He knows when to jump into the rush and is effective when he joins. Never out of position Jack won't let attackers get an open shooting or passing lane. Throws his weight around but won't let himself get out of position. Doesn't let players get position on him. Dougherty has a very high compete level. Blocks a lot of shots. If he can improve his skating I believe he can be a top pair guy.

Collins is a big defender who has finally caught up to his size. His foot speed has really improved. He has the size everyone looks at in a defenseman. He uses his size well in clearing the net and winning battles. Also he uses his reach to poke the puck away or disrupt passing lanes. Very good in transition and is very good positionally. Collins has a strong breakout pass to get the rush going. Great Ice Q in his own end. As Collins will continue to build and mature on a strong season at U of Minnesota.

Plays physical, good back checker and goes to the dirty areas. Good offensive vision. Great shot and good positionally. Fairly raw but really developing. If he becomes a bit more physical he can be an effective top 6 winger. Magyar has been climbing the draft rankings all year and is in a position where he can go 2nd round. Has a goal scoring mind and lead the Rangers in goals in his rookie year.

Went undrafted last year Murphy has all the tools to be a good defenseman, he just needs to put them together. Developed in the last two years in Halifax and has really progressed in his own zone. He's very mobile and he can jump into the rush. Good offensive vision and makes the extra pass. He has size and he needs to use it a bit more on the physical side but he uses his reach to knock pucks away. Doesn't wander in his own end and knows where the opposition is at all times. He can eat a lot of minutes and improves with minutes. If he puts everything together and polishes his game he can be a good NHL defenseman and a steal.
