Nazi Germany.
Does that surprise you? Do you believe the historical fallacy, oft-repeated by NRA supporters, that Hitler confiscated guns from the German citizens during his rise to power? In fact, Hitler did just the opposite,
relaxing Germany's gun control laws.
A brief history lesson:
In 1919, following the end of WWI, the German government banned private ownership of firearms through the
Regulations on Weapons Ownership Act. A decade later, in 1928, the Weimer Republic passed a law that allowed Germans to own firearms but with restrictions and regulations (including registration). Another decade after that, in 1938, Hitler's Third Reich enacted the
German Weapons Act which further relaxed the previous 1928 law. Under Hitler's rule, control of firearms only extended to handguns; long guns and ammunition were no longer regulated. However, just as with the previous 1928 law, firearm ownership records were maintained. The end result of Hitler's gun law was that the German people were
more armed under the Nazi regime than they were previously, yet somehow the NRA fantasy of a citizen militia overthrowing a tyrannical government never occurred.
Of course, Hitler's 1938 gun law
did ban Jews from owning firearms. Perhaps you're among those who naively think that the Holocaust could have been prevented if only Germany's Jewish population could have fought back against the tyranny and oppression of the Nazis. To that facile point, all I can say is the following: the Third Reich was defeated at the cost of nearly ~30 million dead Allied soldiers. These were trained military personnel armed with tanks, artillery, and aircraft. Realistically, what chance would an untrained and uncoordinated Jewish militia armed with light weapons have had against the Wehrmacht?
