I'm with you up until here. Why on earth no registry? I have to register my vehicle in order to operate it legally. Why should a gun be any different?
You may not care what anyone else says, but a registry of who owns a weapon, with the ability to routinely scan to see if they've been involved in any altercations--drug offenses, domestic disputes, etc--might help keep people a little more honest when it comes to their firearms. If you see that someone who owns a weapon has been involved in multiple domestic disputes, you might realize there's a problem before someone ends up dead.
