Paul Kariya got killed because Gary Suter was trained since birth to lay punishment infront of the net. Suter took it too far but it's rich for fans, coaches, and the general establishment to want these guys to play like gladiators right up to the point of some arbitrary sense of decorum and the instant they cross it, in the heat of the game, with split seconds the difference between success and failure they're individually responsible. This passes off any blame to the way these players are being coached and coaxed to play and allows people to somehow escape with the feeling that there's nothing wrong with the game itself.
