I can understand your point if you're talking about labels like "baby blue" as there will be little consistency.

Sure, if the colour you're looking for has a match to a widely known brand you can find an easier reference at that stage. But walk into three paint stores and say "I'm looking for Coke red paint" and I bet you end up with 3 wild variations if the folks are going by their "memory" of the colour VS a hard reference.
Now go into three different stores and say "I'm looking for a warm deep red" and I suspect you'll end up with more consistency.
