Could it have been that they wanted to wrap things up as nice as they could in case Shield didn't get renewed? If they had gotten cancelled, it might have left a weird hole in the Marvel movie universe otherwise.

Good:

• They should get into the habit of making season finales either 2-part events at the end of the season or span into the next season via cliff-hanger. I think them trying to wrap up the season in one episode resulted in things in general being underwhelming and rushed, probably causing the complaints I had in the first couple of bullets.
