Not every player has to be physically engaging. Do you remember the time when Hartley mentioned (and 99% of CPers agreed) that Sven didn't have enough talent to get by on his skill alone. He needed to have more of a complete game and be a good fore-checker in order to have success.
Gaudreau is oozing with skill and is the exception that Hartley was referring to. That's not to say it's okay for him to have a 1 dimensional game, but from what I've heard and seen he's a good back-checker. When he's in the offensive zone it's not like he's being lazy. He's always trying to get open and make things happen.
As a comparison, I know Conacher was smaller and less skilled than Gaudreau and transitioned fine from the NCAA to NHL.
