What I will say is that you probably dont need much time in Venice- one night, possibly two is more than enough. It is insanely busy in July and August and very hot as well. Going in June or September makes a big difference in both these areas. Have been there in both June and August, and the former was much more pleasant.
Dubrovnik is a nice alternative to venice if you have a change of heart, although I still would recommend Venice first to someone that hasn't been to either.

I think Venice is worth seeing once in a lifetime for sure. It's just not like Venice from the movies. It's a massive tourist attraction and less of a cultural experience. I actually went in mid-September... I would hate to see peak season.
But again, I heard that at night after all the day trippers are gone, it is a much better experience.
