Once you get to be 30 lbs below the average sized NHL D-man you are using the same skills to get by... Neither Brodie 6-1 182 or Spurgeon is going to physically dominate and if they get into a shoulder to shoulder battle for the puck both are going to lose more often than not...... Neither is going to clear the power forward from in front of the net.
Ekblad is 6-3 208 as an 18 year old so right now he is an average sized NHL d-man.... at 6-3 or 6-4 220 in 2-3 years he has the tools to win a few battles.
