I think Reinhart absolutely compares to other 1st overall selections very well. Keep in mind that a lot of previous top picks were very offensively-oriented with little thought to their defensive game. Going back and looking at scouting summaries you rarely see a prospect taken within the top 3 of his draft class with 'high defensive acumen' as a strength. Reinhart has out-scored many other notable 1st overalls while maintaining a high regard for the defensive side of the game.
If he was concentrating much more on his offensive abilities, how many more points would he end up getting?
One thing to note when doing comparisons between different players on different teams, and especially in different draft years is how much 'help' they receive from linemates and how good their respective teams are (especially regarding how offensive their respective teams are).
At any rate, I really think Reinhart is underrated when it comes to past drafts. I don't think he is as good as MacKinnon, but I feel he compares very well to everyone else selected between Tavares and MacKinnon - better than some, not as good as some others. Whomever drafts him will end up with a franchise level center as long as his development continues - the kid is really that good.
