Some people have commented about the Flames losing the ability to make quick recalls from the AHL after this move, which made me curious about how often that even happens.

I went through the AHL transactions page for this season: Excluding the "paper" transactions on trade deadline day, the Flames made 30 recalls from Abbotsford this season.

Of those 30 recalls, only 5 of them saw the player play a game on the same day as the recall, and 4 of those were all in the same game, the evening of the trade deadline.

On October 26, Derek Smith was recalled and played that evening against Washington. He played 6:15 and was a -2 in the Flames 5-2 win.

On March 5, Knight and Reinhart were recalled in the morning, took part in practice and played that night. Hanowski and MacDonald were both recalled after the deadline to replace Stempniak and Berra in the line-up. All four players dressed, but MacDonald didn't play, in that evening's 4-1 win over Ottawa. Reinhart had an assist and Knight was 61% on faceoffs.

With all other recalls, there was at least a day between the recall and the player's first game. Although, it's nice to have the ability to make a quick recall, losing the ability won't severely change things.
