People always say this, and it's so inaccurate. Not the part about not selling out the barn, but there is huge differences between what happened in Calgary when we sucked and some of the US markets in questions.

Flames still put 12K to 14K in the stands a night, most of those fans paying full price for tickets. Sure, it's not a sell out, but that's a lot different than what often happens in the non hockey markets.

There, you often get less attendance than the above, and most of it is on serverly discounted tickets.

Yes, everyone performs better with a winner, even in hockey markets like Calgary, but the impact during the lean years is a lot more muted in a hockey market.
