I like this, because sometimes young(er) and/or less experienced people in your organization are not ready to take the reigns of a particular position, and none of us are really in a position to know if Conny is ready or not. However, Burke letting Conny know that Conny does possess certain intangibles that the organization does value and that they will make a point of investing into him through training and mentorship moving forward should Conny be deemed not ready. To me this is a win/win because either Conny gets the chance to prove himself from a proven leader, or he gets groomed for the role over the next few years understanding that he will eventually get an opportunity.
