Not necessarily; I mean Subban and Karlsson were on "just pretty good" teams the past couple of seasons and won it. Meanwhile, Doughty's been the best defenseman on a really good defensive team for a few years now and hasn't had a sniff. Suter was nominated and really should have won last year, imo, but the Wild missed the playoffs.
