Is there a study anywhere of average draft success for a team? I suspect most greatly overestimate the success level.
Just based on averages and extremely rough calculations - there are 210 players picked each year (approx) - 30 teams x 7 rounds. Assuming each team has 21 regular players (12 forwards + 6 defense + 1 goalie and two spares in there somewhere), and you're pulling players from 10 years of drafts - you've got 210 regular NHL players coming from 2100 drafted players - so you're looking at a 10% success level.
That is probably high - most teams aren't going to have 21 regulars (the last few spots get shuffled around), it assumes no undrafted players make the NHL and 10 years to pull players is likely low since if you're good enough you'll play for longer than that.
