In that thread, someone asked who has read the books, and who's just watching the show. Several people replied with "I just watch the show. I don't want to ruin the tv show by reading the books". Had just one person said it, I wouldn't have thought much of it. Two raised an eyebrow. More just made me "WTF?"

Actually I do know someone from my work who watched S1 and was into it so he started reading the books. But then he decided that while the show was good, the books were too geeky for him to continue with.

And for me, that's a totally valid reason not to read the books.
