It's not short sighted at all. It's a bird in hand. And that bird would instantly become one of the top players on the team.
Its conceivable / possible that the team could go in either direction next year, sure.
But the teams below the Flames this year tried to fail. If they and others do that next year (history shows that certain teams do) how can the Flames possibly finish lower?
So they will finish better next year. If you are playing the odds, the odds of having 2 and 4 this year are safer than the 5-10 selection next year magically turning into Connor McDavid or Eichel.
