Actually, the US is pressuring Japan to get more involved in the East, including requesting that they arm themselves with nukes. You have to consider that the US cannot support any prolonged war in the East. You have China, India, and potentially North Korea all having nuclear capabilities in the area, and the US no longer has the military strength to hold off all three. Absolutely they want Japan to have nukes, they just aren't likely to support that idea in public. In this particular case, it's best if Japan does have nukes because they are the only ally of the US in the region.
