I feel like that's half-accurate. Empathy is, generally, a fantastic and necessary feeling, but the reason why the media wants to be there is because that is where they believe the story is. It is something that plays to, and on, someone's empathy. This is why there was a rush to put up victim profiles. It was, in an unfortunate truth, a competition to be the first to have the most details on the victims. You want people to grieve and be sad and empathetic, but you want them to do it with -your- news site. Your articles. The media does not exist to provide empathy, it is meant to be there to project your empathy. It's a business and businesses don't have feelings.

Everyone will always be glad of the love and support of a nation. Just don't mistake what the media actually is as opposed to what you want it to be.
