If so, I know back in the day when I worked at Safeway, we had box cutters to open everything while doing stock. Many a times I put my cutter in my pocket or smock and walked out of the store with it totally forgetting I had it on me.
Not saying this is the case, but it makes me wonder if the weapon he brought with him was actually just his box cutter which potentially, a few Safeway employees would have on them right now and whether he intentionally brought it or just had it on him from after work.

That's sort of reaching don't you think? He just happened to have a box cutter on him of all things. If the knife was still in his smock when they caught him you could be right, but if he took it out and left it and the scene, then obviously he brought it there for a reason (whether or not he actually used it). Maybe he brought the box cutter with him, but then decided to use the knife at the scene because he figured it would work better for what he was setting out to do? Perhaps the perp knew he could cause more harm with a kitchen knife than just a simple box cutter (especially in a crowded setting).
All of the evidence will come to light soon enough, but at first glance I think there is quite a bit of evidence to support that he had at least planned something for that night. Social media may also play a role in this as well, as why did he delete his linkedin account only days before the crime?
