You have to keep in mind too that he screwed his voice up pretty bad making the Black album and needed to see a vocal coach to show him how to use his vocal cords properly without damaging them. Maturity played a big part in his voice changing too. I dont think it's changed that drastically though as some people make it out to be.

The Black album featured his voice at his best point. IMO, anyway.
Nobody rivals him with more fierceness and aggresion.
