I'm not convinced of that. Yes, more valuable in the short term: in the fact that he was NHL ready, and had been developed within an excellent system. But the Flames were not really in the position to be opting for NHL ready today over NHL ready in two or three more years. I think teams will almost exclusively prefer to develop their own talent. The opportunity to select a high end player from a deep draft, and to develop him to play in your system and on your team is in itself pretty valuable. There are good reasons to expect that Poirier will be a great player, and I would argue that he would become so at a much more opportune time in the team's cycle than Nyquist now.
