McKenzie is treading in "reverse Eklund" territory here. Discussing what might be happening (Eklund) and what could have happened (McKenzie) are equally questionable as in both cases the scenarios are almost never cut and dry as negotiations progress and offers are thrown around.
In my experience in the business world, a back and forth negotiation usually includes a lot of hypotheticals with both parties throwing out things as feelers to get a better sense of what the other sides breaking point is, knowing full well that what they are saying/offering may not be part of the end package.
