The question becomes why are people evil.
It is much easier to understand mental illness as a reason for people doing evil things then people just being evil. Also if it is mental illness we know that society can create a solution for it. If it is just a person being randomly evil with no rational for choosing victims its much scarier.
So I perfer to be comforted by the thought that it is likely someone with a poorly managed mental illness and not someone who is just evil.
