Here's the videos of illegal and legal hits from the DPS:
The two that are probably closest to this situation are the final hit on the illegal video (also on D. Sedin) and the first hit on the legal. I'd say the first "legal" hit in the video was worse than the Byron hit.
If Sedin doesn't go down, I doubt anyone would even remember it tomorrow. I've seen Byron throw many bigger hits this season that didn't get penalized.
When Byron commits to the hit (about 0:04 in the video), he's looking at Sedin's right shoulder. When he makes the hit (about 0:05 in the video), he makes contact with Sedin's left shoulder. He could have initiated contact a lot sooner, and in a much more dangerous position, than he did. He waited until Sedin was against the boards before starting the hit, and it looks to me like he minimized the force of the hit.
I'm not sure what else Byron could have done to make the hit "cleaner".
