Affording it is one thing, but affording it and feeling it economically is another.
Getting wasted is cheaper than a cab in a lot of places. You can get a $20-$30 bottle of hooch to get drunk, but a cab ride in a large city from downtown to the suburbs can easily cost $60 or more one-way in a lot of North American cities.
I'm not saying that the cost is an excuse for an average person, but the decision to cab it, should be a lot easer for a wealthy person who won't feel it in their pocket book.
